The EU Commission wants Member States to improve access to drinking water for all people, especially vulnerable and marginalised groups who currently have difficulty accessing drinking water. It also wants to give the public easy, user-friendly access to information about the quality and supply of drinking water in their local area.

It is hoped that the new rules proposed this week by the Commission will lead to an increase in the consumption of tap water and thereby reduce the amount of plastic waste from bottled water as well as help EU households to save money through public space access to water.
